Pet doors in security screen doors: what to know first

A pet door makes life easier for you and the dog. Just know what it does to the door's security rating before you add one.

Invisi-Gard screens across sliding doors that open onto a garden
The short answer

Invisi-Gard doors can be made with a pet door, but once a pet door is added the door is no longer classed as a security door. If security matters most on that door, think about putting the pet door somewhere else, like a laundry or side door, and keep your main doors as full security doors.

A pet door means no more getting up to let the dog in and out ten times a day. With a security screen door, there's one thing to understand before you go ahead.

The trade-off

Invisi-Gard doors can be made with a pet door. But once a pet door is added, the door is no longer classed as a security door. A pet door is, after all, a deliberate opening in the screen.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't have one. It just means it's worth thinking about which door it goes in.

Choosing the right door

  • Keep your main doors as full security doors. The front door and the big sliding doors to the patio are the ones most worth keeping fully secure.
  • Use a back, side or laundry door for the pet door. Most pets are happy with any door that gets them to the yard.
  • Think about where the pet door sits in the door. It needs to suit your pet's size and how they come and go.

Other things to think about

  • Size. Measure your pet at the shoulder and allow for them growing if they're still a pup.
  • Who else might use it. Bigger pet doors suit bigger dogs, but they're also bigger openings.
  • Insects. A pet door is another gap in the screen, so think about the mozzies on summer nights.
