There are four main ways to do it: security screen enclosures, aluminium shutters, outdoor blinds and slat screens, and plenty of patios use a mix. Check with your council or a building certifier first, because enclosing a patio can need approval. Our guide to patio enclosures
Common questions
When is cyclone season in Townsville?
The tropical cyclone season in North Queensland officially runs from 1 November to 30 April. It's best to book roller shutters before the season starts.
Do I need approval to enclose my patio?
It can. Check with your council or a building certifier before you enclose a patio or verandah.
Can I leave outdoor blinds down in strong wind?
No. Outdoor blinds are made for sun, rain and privacy, not storms. Roll them up when strong winds are forecast.
