Patio enclosures in Townsville: turning the patio into an outdoor room

Bug-free, private and usable most of the year. Here are the main ways to enclose a patio, and how to choose.

The short answer

There are four main ways to enclose a Townsville patio: security screen enclosures like Invisi-Gard that keep bugs out and let the breeze through, aluminium shutters that open and close for shade and privacy, outdoor blinds that roll away when you don't need them, and slat privacy screens. Many patios use a mix. Check with your council or a building certifier before you start, because enclosing a patio can need approval.

An enclosed patio is like getting an extra room without building one. Here are the main ways to do it, and what each does best.

1. Security screen enclosures

A patio enclosed with security screen mesh, like an Invisi-Gard patio enclosure, gives you:

  • no mozzies or flies,
  • the breeze and the view,
  • and the security of being able to leave the patio furniture and the back door open.

It's the best choice if bugs are what's stopping you using the patio. Read about Invisi-Gard, Alu-Gard and diamond grille.

2. Aluminium shutters

Fixed, hinged or bi-folding aluminium shutters let you open the patio right up or close it off for shade and privacy. They're great on a verandah that cops the afternoon sun, and they give a permanent, built-in look.

3. Outdoor blinds

Zip-Screen outdoor blinds roll away completely when you don't need them, and come down for sun, rain or privacy. They're the most flexible option, but they need to be rolled up in strong winds.

4. Privacy screens

Aluminium slat privacy screens give you privacy from the neighbours while still letting air through. They're built to suit your home in our Townsville workshop.

Mixing them

Most patios use more than one. A common setup is:

  • screens across the openings you walk through,
  • outdoor blinds on the side that gets the afternoon sun,
  • and a privacy screen on the side facing the neighbours.

What changes the cost

  • The size of the patio and how many sides you're enclosing
  • Which option, or mix of options, you choose
  • The frames, colours and fabrics

Common questions

How much does a patio enclosure cost?

It depends on the size of the patio, which option you choose and how many sides you're enclosing. Screen enclosures, shutters and blinds are all priced differently. A free measure and quote is the quickest way to an accurate price.

Do I need council approval to enclose my patio?

It can depend on what you're doing. Check with your local council or a building certifier before you start.

Can a patio enclosure keep mozzies out?

A fully screened enclosure, like an Invisi-Gard patio enclosure, keeps insects out while letting the breeze through. Blinds and shutters alone won't stop insects.
