Invisi-Gard or Crimsafe: how do they compare?

Both are Australian stainless steel mesh screens, and both are good. Here's where they really differ, so you can compare quotes properly.

Looking out through an Invisi-Gard security door on a Townsville home
The short answer

Invisi-Gard and Crimsafe are both Australian security screens made from woven stainless steel mesh, and both are tested to Australian Standards. The main differences are the grade of steel and the warranty. Invisi-Gard uses 316 marine-grade stainless steel, which is made for salt air, with a lifetime warranty on the mesh for homes and 15 years on the frame. Crimsafe uses 0.9 mm 304-grade stainless steel, which Crimsafe says is stronger, with a 10-year warranty that can be extended to 15 years on its top ranges.

If you're looking at security screens in Townsville, you've probably come across both names. They're the two best-known stainless steel mesh screens in Australia, they look much the same from the street, and both are a big step up from an old diamond grille. Here's how they compare, in plain English.

What they have in common

  • Woven stainless steel mesh in an aluminium frame, so you can see out and the breeze comes straight through.
  • Insects are kept out by the mesh itself, with no separate fly screen.
  • Tested to Australian Standards against knives, pry bars and impact.
  • Australian. Invisi-Gard is designed by Alspec, and Crimsafe is made by Crimsafe Security Systems. Both are Australian companies.
  • Licensed dealers only. Both are sold and installed through licensed dealers, which matters for the warranty.

Where they differ

The steel

  • Invisi-Gard: 316 marine-grade stainless steel mesh with a black coating. 316 contains molybdenum, which helps it stand up to salt air.
  • Crimsafe: 0.9 mm 304-grade stainless steel mesh, which Crimsafe calls Tensile Tuff. Crimsafe says this grade is stronger than 316.

Near the coast

  • Invisi-Gard: the mesh is held with a screwless clamp that keeps the stainless steel away from the aluminium frame, which helps prevent corrosion where the two metals meet. Alspec reports more than 2,000 hours of salt-spray testing.
  • Crimsafe: the mesh is held with Crimsafe's Screw-Clamp system. Crimsafe reports 3,000 hours of salt-spray testing.
  • The two companies use different salt-spray tests, so those hours can't be compared directly. Either way, rinse your screens about once a month in Townsville. It's part of keeping both warranties.

The warranty

  • Invisi-Gard: lifetime on the mesh for homes, and 15 years on the frame, when it's installed by a licensed Invisi-Gard dealer and cleaned as recommended.
  • Crimsafe: 10 years, which you can extend to 12 years (Crimsafe Regular and Classic) or 15 years (Crimsafe Ultimate and iQ) by registering within 60 days.

The look

  • Both: a fine black woven mesh with holes of about 1.5 to 1.6 mm. Easy to see out, and hard to tell apart from the street.

The price

  • Both sit at the premium end of security screens. The exact price depends on the size, the locks and the colour, so compare quotes like for like.

Which one should you choose?

  • You live near the water or get salt spray: Invisi-Gard's 316 mesh is made for it.
  • You want the longest warranty on the mesh: Invisi-Gard's is lifetime for homes.
  • You already have a Crimsafe quote: get an Invisi-Gard quote for the same doors and windows, and compare them side by side.
  • Either way, the installer matters as much as the brand. A good fit, the right locks and a local team who'll come back if you need them make the biggest difference day to day.

Comparing quotes

When you have quotes in front of you, check each one for:

  1. The same doors and windows, and hinged or sliding.
  2. The locks: how many locking points, and whether they're security-rated.
  3. The frame colour.
  4. The mesh, and its grade of stainless steel.
  5. The warranty, and whether you need to register it.
  6. How long until it's installed.

Common questions

Does GNB sell Crimsafe?

No. We're a licensed Invisi-Gard dealer, so Invisi-Gard is what we build and install. Crimsafe is sold through its own licensed dealers.

Is 316 or 304 stainless steel better for security screens?

They're good at different things. 316 contains molybdenum, which helps it resist corrosion from salt air, so it's the usual choice near the coast. Crimsafe says its 304-grade mesh has higher tensile strength. Both brands are tested to Australian Standards.

Can I tell them apart from the street?

Not easily. Both are a fine black woven mesh in an aluminium frame, and both are easy to see out through.
