There's no single 'cyclone rated' stamp. Townsville is in cyclonic wind region C, and a properly rated shutter or screen comes with a test certificate showing what it was tested for (wind pressure, flying debris or both), up to what size, and how it must be installed. The Queensland Government warns that many products are sold as cyclone rated without that testing, so always ask to see the certificate.
"Cyclone shutters" and "cyclone rated" get used a lot in North Queensland. Some products have real test results behind them, and some don't. Here's how to tell the difference.
Townsville is in wind region C
Australia's wind loading standard splits the country into wind regions. Townsville is in region C, which is a cyclonic region. Any shutter or screen that's genuinely rated for cyclones has been tested against the kind of wind pressures, and sometimes flying debris, that a region C home can face.
There's no single "cyclone rated" stamp
The Queensland Government has warned that many screens and shutters are sold as "cyclone rated" without being tested for the relevant wind or debris loads. A real rating comes with a test certificate, and that certificate tells you:
- What it was tested for. Wind pressure, flying debris, or both. These are different tests.
- The size it covers. A rating usually only applies up to the size that was tested.
- How it must be installed. The fixing method matters. Install it differently and the rating may not apply.
Wind rated vs debris rated
- Wind rated means the product held up to a set wind pressure in testing.
- Debris rated means it resisted flying debris in a set impact test.
A product can have one without the other, so ask which one you're getting.
Questions to ask any supplier
- Can I see the test certificate?
- Is it tested for wind pressure, flying debris or both?
- Does the rating cover the size of my windows?
- Will it be installed exactly the way it was tested?
If the answers are vague, treat the "cyclone rated" claim with caution.
What about the Household Resilience Program?
The Queensland Government's Household Resilience Program helped eligible coastal homeowners pay for cyclone upgrades. It closed to new applications on 2 October 2026. If you were already approved, the program requires works to be completed and final documents submitted by 1 August 2027. See the Queensland Government page for the latest.
Our approach
We'll always tell you exactly what each product we offer has been tested for, so you can make the call with real information. If you'd rather keep the view, Invisi-Maxx stainless steel screens have been independently tested to exceed the windborne debris requirements for cyclone regions C and D. Day to day, roller shutters also give you shade, privacy, security and blockout, which is why plenty of Townsville homes have them on the windows that matter most.

Common questions
What wind region is Townsville in?
Townsville is in wind region C, which is a cyclonic region under the Australian wind loading standard.
What's the difference between wind rated and debris rated?
A wind rating shows a product held up to a set wind pressure in testing. A debris rating shows it resisted being hit by flying debris in a set test. They're different tests, and a product can have one without the other.
Is the Household Resilience Program still open?
The Queensland Government's Household Resilience Program closed to new applications on 2 October 2026. If you were already approved, the program requires works to be completed and final documents submitted by 1 August 2027. Check qld.gov.au for the latest.
Can outdoor blinds be used as cyclone protection?
